Learning to Bike

Miss Violet Ward, daughter of General William Ward of S.I. and Miss Daisy Elliot, teacher of calisthenics, on the bicycle. This was taken when Alice did a series of pictures on correct cycling for ladies to illustrate Violet Ward's book, "How to Ride a Bicycle." Daisy taught gymnastics and posture and "all kinds of shooting up and down" at the local ladies gym classes.

The illustrations for Violet's book on cycling are among the few photographs Alice ever had commercially published.

"Bicycling for Young Ladies," by Miss Marie E. Ward, published in 1896.
