OPEN HOUSE NEW YORK: House tours with LGBTQ+ focus
Enjoy a guided tour of Clear Comfort, a charming waterfront Victorian Gothic cottage that serves as the Alice Austen House museum. Located in a lovely park on the shore of Staten Island near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge with sweeping views of Brooklyn and lower Manhattan, the museum is dedicated to the life and work of trailblazing lesbian photographer Alice Austen. The Alice Austen House staff offers house tours with a lens focused on LGBTQ+ and Women’s History. The newest exhibition of Austen’s contemporary Lora Webb Nichols, “Lora Webb Nichols and Alice Austen: Women and the Cultivation of Community and Intimacy” will be on view. Tours are offered hourly, first-come, first-served (max 15), or explore on your own throughout the museum’s open hours.
Launched in 2003, Open House New York Weekend is an annual festival that opens hundreds of noteworthy or significant places across the five boroughs to foster discovery and delight for New Yorkers and visitors alike.
On October 20-22, 2023, the 21st annual OHNY Weekend festival will offer a mix of in-person experiences, self-guided explorations, and digital content—inviting you to get an insider’s look at everything from single rooms, studios, factories, and public spaces to entire buildings, blocks, bike corridors, and waterways.
Building on our expanded mission to promote citywide access to all New Yorkers, the festival is now 100% free to the public.
