Alice Austen

June 1888

This country's first great woman photographer, a sensitive artist with a camera, drew an affectionate 19th century portrait of her native land-- a gentle and long vanished America.

Alice poses before a yew hedge in "Sunday clothes" . That overskirt -- my, was not it smart." She held an umbrella and a little silver change purse. The hat is banked with white lilacs. Picture taken by her uncle, captain Oswald Muller in June, 1888.
