Every year the Alice Austen House Museum offers a great chance for children and teens to have fun with photography, history and social etiquette by hosting educational summer camps.
Summer
Camps
Join us, make art and new friends! All year long we offer exciting educational programs but the summer is not to be missed! Each camp last one week and participants are in sessions for half of the day.
In one of our camps children ages 7-11 have the opportunity to dive into the world of photography. Participants will learn basic photography skills using digital cameras and printers provided by the museum. Participants will have the chance to explore a new form of self expression by doing self-portraits, capturing landscapes, making their own pinhole camera, and even dressing up in Victorian attire and imitating the popular poses of the time for the camera! We also host a photography camp for teens ages 12-17. This camp offers a range of opportunities for participants to continue to develop and mature their knowledge of photography. The camp’s activities include working with digital photography, learning about photographic history, experimenting with professional lighting, and creating a portfolio.
During the Victorian era and Alice Austen’s lifetime, manners were everything! The Alice Austen House Museum annually hosts the ever-popular etiquette summer camps. These camps show children that good etiquette can be fun! One session is for children ages 5-7. Participants engage in activities involving greetings, eye contact, speaking clearly, table manners, kindness, helping others, and more! Another session is for children and adolescents ages 8-12. Participants in this camp achieve a deeper understanding of table manners, social etiquette, and communication skills. Catering especially to this age group, this camp is a great confidence booster and forum to establish leadership skills!
The cost for the Photography Camp for ages 7-11, the Teen Photography Camp, and the Etiquette Camp for ages 8-12 are $175. The price for the Etiquette Camp for ages 5-7 is $150. All camps require a one time $10 registration fee.
These camps are invaluable for all individuals and will teach them skills to empower them for the rest of their lives. Learning photography can be a new outlet for communication and be exemplary in recording one's peronal history of memories with families, etc. We believe that very interested children should have an opportunity to learn from our programs, therefore, we offer scholarships for select cases of financial need and strong interest.
