Alice Austen

Chicago World's Fair

Summer 1893

The fountains, sculptures, and gleaming white buildings for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago covered more than 600 acres.  Alice spent two weeks there, recording obelisks and peristyles, the Art Palace and Machinery Hall, statues of Columbus, Indians, and abstract spirits.  She copyrighted some 25 photos of the exposition.
